and the West Midlands, Needwood Forest Gliding Club has provided
a centre for gliding activities for in excess of 30 years.
|
The Club moved to Cross Hayes Field in Autumn
1998. The site comprises of
70 acres of beautiful grassland. It is orientated WNW/ESE and is
approximately 1.2 kilometres in length. A 6 acre area to the south
east corner of the site houses the club buildings and car and trailer
parking areas. |
 |
| A Brief Club History |
|
|
The Club, which was originally known as Burton and
Derby Gliding Club, was formed in 1965 when a group of local gliding enthusiasts acquired an open
cockpit T21 and started operating from Church Broughton airfield. |
|
 |
In the
early 1980's the club purchased an area of land just outside the village of
Marchington, near Uttoxeter, and changed its name to Marchington Gliding
Club. |
|
Within ten years however the Home Office had drawn up plans for the
construction of a prison on the site and the Club was forced to sell up and look
for a new home. A temporary move to nearby Tatenhill Airfield kept the
Club flying whilst it searched for a more permanent site and, in November 1998
the Club changed its name to Needwood Forest Gliding Club and settled into its
new home at Cross Hayes Field where it has a secure 25 year lease. |
