Whilst long summer days and booming skies may seem but a distant dream, spring is fast approaching and now is the time to make plans for the forthcoming season. The committee are currently assessing our operations and considering a number of initiatives aimed at improving the way in which we operate. With falling membership numbers, the recruitment and retention of members features high on our list of priorities. Following last years changes to the instructor rota which helped us to give check flights a higher priority, we are now investigating a booking system for Trial Lessons, a redesign of the flying list and a reappraisal of our training strategy to ensure that we focus on the needs of individual pilots - both pre and post solo. As part of this initiative, this year we will be
holding a Pre Solo/Pre Bronze flying week early in the season followed
by two traditional club flying weeks during the summer months. We
also plan to hold a number of flying evenings during the summer months,
this should enable us to fly a greater number of temporary members
without impacting on 'member' flying during the
day. |

| DATES FOR YOUR DIARY:
PRE SOLO/PRE BRONZE WEEK : Monday 29 April - Friday 3 May |
|||||||
| An intensive week
aimed at progressing participants towards their next goals. With
two instructors and just 8 trainees/early solo pilots, the week should
provide the opportunity for lots of flying as well as a programme of
classroom sessions covering general flying issues and Bronze C
topics. There will be a charge of £50 for the week, payable by 1
March. Places are limited - to reserve yours e.mail val@gogliding.co.uk |
|||||||
| CLUB WEEKS : Monday 27 May - Friday 31 May Monday 29 July - Friday 2 August |
|||||||
|
This year we'll be holding two club flying weeks at
Cross Hayes. Both weeks are open to all members regardless of their
experience level, with the aim of giving everyone the opportunity to
progress their flying skills, so why not take the opportunity to join us
for a week or two of flying. Watch the notice board for booking
details - as in previous years a daily deposit will be required but this
is refundable against flying fees. |

Club Sweatshirts etc - orders are now being taken for Fleeces, Sweatshirts, Polo Shirts etc - Andy Davis has full details andydavis_ad@hotmail.com or see the notice in the club room. The club has taken a stand at the Festive Gift Fair at the NEC, the fair runs from Thursday 22 November to Sunday 25 November, inclusive. Visit their Web site at www.festivegiftfair.co.uk for more details - if you decide to visit the fair, you'll find us on stand D10. Part of the preparations for the Fair have included the production of a Needwood Forest Gliding Club video - those who've been at the club on flying days recently can't have failed to notice the ever present video camera. The finished production (not to Speilberg standards I hasten to add, although some may say it took nearly as long!) runs for 5 minutes and aims to show a little of what gliding is about and to give a feel of our club. Copies will be available for members to purchase, further details from Val val@gogliding.co.uk. Not a lot of 'news' as such on flying issues - so far the field has stood up well to the autumnal weather with a significant number of launches in November. Congratulations to Berian Griffiths who has taken his first solo flight and is now looking forward to competing with daughter Anna for the K6! Speaking of single seaters the K6 is proving to be a popular addition to the fleet and the K23 is now back in service. With
respect to our plans to help winter operations, work is underway on the
retrieve winch, many thanks to Andrew Walsh for his assistance in
sourcing parts. The planning application for a track, however, has
been less successful - whilst the Council approved the application in
early October, they also somewhat bizarrely conditioned it to prohibit
taking off or landing on it! Unfortunately there's nothing we can
do to overcome the condition and construct the track in time to help
this winters operation, but we will be reviewing the situation with a
view to next years operations. |
If you fancy a few days flying our next club week runs from 13 - 17 August, weather permitting we should be flying every day, visitors welcome. For those members who been at the club in recent weeks, we currently have the PW5 demonstrator on site and we hope it will still be with us for club week, giving members the chance to add a new type to their log book. |

Congratulations to Anna Griffiths on her recent first solo flight. Anna who is 16 started gliding last summer and, earlier this year was awarded one of the club scholarship places for 2001/2. Other scholarship holders are Joe Wright, Nick Griffin and Andrew Pyatt all of whom have been given a second year scholarship following the abysmal winter which resulted in minimal flying for them for 6 months of their previous scholarships. Applications for next years scholarships will be invited in the Spring - details will be posted on our website nearer the time. |

July saw us running a special evening for the 17th Burton Scout Group, with a number of scouts taking flights to qualify for their 'try a sport' badge. If you know of any groups that may be interested in a similar evening next year please send me details - val@gogliding.co.uk. These evenings are very much in line with the club's policy of encouraging greater participation by young people, and as such only a nominal charge of £10 per head is made. This year has also seen us running a number of successful group flying evenings during the summer months. These are an excellent way of introducing our sport to a wider audience without impacting on member flying, they also generate much needed revenue for the club. There are no more evenings available this year, but we'll be running them again next year so if you have a group of 6 - 10 friends or work colleges who'd like to come along for a flight contact Dave Bowden, 01283 790451, for more details.

| In July, we attended the Richard Wakefield School Community Day in Tutbury. The DG500 and the Sie 3 occupied centre stage at the event and provided lots of people with the opportunity to have a close look at the gliders. The Mayor and Mayoress of East Staffordshire, who opened the event, talked with Scholarship holders Anna Griffiths and Nick Griffin and local MP Janet Dean also visited the stand and talked with members. | ||

Finally members will be pleased to know that launches exceeded budget in both June and July. This is the first time since moving to Cross Hayes that we have managed to achieve our monthly targets. Following the disastrous effects of the wet weather last year, plans are now under way to improve winter operations. We've submitted a planning application to East Staffs Borough Council for the construction of an extension to the existing track, which will hopefully provide us with a hardcore landing strip, and there are plans to improve the retrieve winch system. |

Aside from no cross country flying due to the Foot and Mouth crisis, we are now fully operational again and visitors are welcome on any club flying day. Weather permitting, Trial Lessons are available at weekends, Wednesdays, Bank Holidays and during our Club Weeks. Our first club week takes place from Monday 30 April to Friday 4 May. Whilst Foot and Mouth is still a concern and the BGA ban means there'll be no Cross Country flying, members should find there will be plenty of opportunities to brush up on other aspects of flying after the long winter lay off! We are also hopeful of having a new glider to play with sometime during the first club week - FRG, a Sie 3, has been donated to the Club and is currently undergoing refurbishment with a view to getting it in the air during the week. For those who don't know, the Sie is similar in performance to a K6E and, in providing another club single seat glider, will improve the opportunities for badge flights and cross country flying (once the impact of Foot and Mouth has faded of course!) |

Foot and Mouth - flying activities resume On 18 March the government issued guidelines for the general public on countryside activities and visits. Following the advice issued within these guidelines and noting that the nearest outbreaks of foot and mouth disease are in excess of 8 miles from Cross Hayes , the committee have decided to resume some flying operations with effect from Saturday 24 March. Initially flying will be restricted to members only. If you have an Air Experience Voucher or would like to take a Trial Lesson, please call Val Roberts on 01283 820108 for details of the current situation. Please note that the Club has taken the following precautionary measures:
The committee will continue to monitor the situation regarding possible further outbreaks of the virus, additional government and MAFF advice and will up date this site as and when the situation changes. Further details on Foot and Mouth Disease, including the government's guidance can be found on www.maff.gov.uk
Foot and Mouth - suspension of flying activities As the recently confirmed outbreaks of Foot and Mouth in Staffordshire (Leigh, near Uttoxeter and Chase Terrace) mean that we are now within an Infected Area, the committee have decided to temporarily suspend flying activities from the site. We will however be watching further developments very closely and will notify members as soon as this situation changes. The committee haven't taken this decision lightly. Indeed we continued to operate over the last two weekends, although those who were at the club last weekend will know that we chose to place considerable restrictions on our operation. With the news late on Sunday of a confirmed case of FMD at Chase Terrace, approximately 9 miles from the club, however, we are now in an infected area and the committee do not believe that we can continue to operate until the full implications of the situation are clearer. We're sure all members will appreciate the need for the club to adopt a responsible stance during this crisis. The Foot and Mouth epidemic has already impacted upon the UK gliding movement. Gliding relies very heavily on the good will of farmers, with a harmonious relationship between the gliding movement and the farming community having been built up over many years. It is a generally held belief within the gliding movement that, at the current time, any action which could be interpreted as irresponsible would do untold and lasting damage to our sport. The BGA have banned all Cross Country flying until further notice and many clubs have already voluntarily closed or are restricting their operations in response to the outbreak. At this stage we do not feel it is necessary to close access to the club room/hangar area. Work will continue on CofA's and other general maintenance tasks over the coming weekend with the aim of getting all club gliders serviceable as soon as possible - our hope is that the outbreak is coming under control and that the suspension of flying activities will be short lived. Obviously this will require enough people on site to derig gliders etc - please give me a call if you are able to help with this as we need to minimise traffic to and from the site. First soaring flights of the year Saturday 24 February saw the first soaring flights of the season from Cross Hayes with reports of 6 up and climbs to FL45! Despite still being very soft and quite wet in places, the field held up well, with both the retrieve winch and the Geomesh proving their worth. There's no doubt that we would have been unable to get the cables the length of the field using the conventional tractor towing method, but the retrieve buggy 'sailed' through the wetter areas of the field leaving barely a mark! Most landings were on the geomesh strip which saw its most intensive use so far and appeared to offer considerable protection to the soft ground. C of A's and Winter Maintenance Dave Johnstone has completed the C of A on the K23 and is now working on the Blanik, volunteers to clean and polish it will be welcome. Alan Roberts has hard waxed the K23 and will shortly be starting work on the DG500 and K21. New Rates This year has seen a modest increase in membership fees and soaring
costs. Full details of the new rates are on our prices
page. |
Club Weeks Once again we will be running 3 Club Weeks during the coming year and all members are invited to come along for a fun week of flying. Full details and a booking form will be available in the Club Room shortly. Dates are as follows: 30 April - 4 May, 2 - 6 July, 13 - 17 August |

Retrieve Winch becomes operational
![]() |
![]() |
![]() |
Following its first trials early last month, the retrieve winch has undergone further modifications and is now up and running, meaning we can now fly even when its too wet to take the tractor across the field! |
![]() |
The retrieve winch pulls out a buggy which has both cables attached to it, the first cable is used to launch a glider, the second to return the buggy to the winch. The buggy is proving to be extremely stable, keeping a straight course up and down the field over successive runs. Turn round time on the first real day of operations was around 6 minutes between launches but it's anticipated that this will improve as we get used to the system.
